Henry Kortegast was the seventh son of German-born William Christian Julius Kortegast and his Irish wife, Sarah Cassidy. Private H. Kortegast, Waihao, was one of the recruits for the Tenth Reinforcements who left South Canterbury in mid November 1915 for Trentham Camp. His brother, Hugh Sarsfield Kortegast, was killed in action in 1917 at Passchendaele. Another brother, Charles (Carl) Kortegast, was called up.
