Biographical Notes
Joseph McCabe was the son of Mary Ann McCabe. He may have been born on 28 November 1894 at Timaru, to Mary McCabe (no record of a father). Mary Ann Clancy had married Edward McCabe in in 1868 at Enniskerry, County Wicklow, Ireland. In 1874 Edward, Mary and two daughters emigrated to New Zealand, the younger daughter dying at sea. They had four more children born at Waimate, but no Joseph. In the Timaru Magistrate's Court in February 1886, Edward McCabe was charged with deserting his wife andchildren on 10 December 1884. He was sentenced to one month in prison. He had returned to Waimate with the connivance of his wife, who was in receipt of charitable aid. He was actually arrested in the house. A warranr for arrest had been taken out a year previously but he could not be found untilthis occasion. Mrs McCabe said that there were five children. Her husband had gone away to look for work. In March 1902 Edward McCabe drowned, accidentally, while crossing the Hinds River. He was buried at Mount Somers. Mrs Mary Ann McCabe died in 1939 and was buried at Waimate.
