Biographical Notes

Charles Christopher Dunford was the fifth son of Henry (Harry) and Margaret Jane (née Cotton). Henry had arrived with his family at Lyttleton in 1851 on the "Cressy" and married Irish-born Margaret Jane in 1866 at Christchurch. Charles married Catherine Elizabeth Enright (Kate) on 9 January 1907 at Timaru. Kate's parents, Daniel and Mary Enright, were hotelkeepers at Temuka from about 1905 for some twenty years. Charles and Kate had three children - Monica Marie Anastasia Dunford (Mona) born on 25 February 1908 at Dunedin, Inez Irene Dunford born 14 July 1909 at Dunedin and Bertrand Charles Dunford born on 1 June 1912 at Invercargill. Charles' wife, Catherine Elizabeth Dunford, died on 9 July 1912 at Dunedin and is buried in the Southern Cemetery there, leaving three little children motherless. Next-of-kin for Charles is believed to be Mary Agnes Enright who was a school teacher at Seaward Downs and who may well have taken responsibility for some of or all the chilrdren. Mary married John McGlinchey in 1920 at Temuka. Charles Christopher Dunford married secondly Clara North in 1921. Charles and Clara had a son, Desmond Alfred Dunford, who died young, and a daughter Deirdre Dunford born on 21 October 1923 at Dunedin. Kate's brother, Michael Francis Enright, served with the Australian Forces in World War I and lost his life in World War II. Edward Samuel Dunford, a brother of Charles, served in World War I, as did two cousins - Alfred Dunford and Donald Joseph Dunford, and three nephews - Albert William Fisher, George Duncan Fisher and James McNicol Fisher. Charles' son, Bertrand, who served in the Second World War, came home safely after being a prisoner of war.
