The family later moved to the Palmerston North area. He received his flying training at Canterbury Flying School, Christchurch, and was certified on a Caudron Biplane on 10 August 1918. He was posted to the Royal Flying Corps and commissioned a Second Lieutenant on 12 February 1919. His brothers, James Dryburgh Anderson and John Anderson, served with the New Zealand troops in World War I.
