Biographical Notes
James Guthrie was the third son of Robert and Catherine Rebecca (née McCassey or Rolleston) Guthrie, and the second of three brothers to leave for the front. . His father Robert, from Scotland, was one of the pioneers of the Mackenzie Country. He died unexpectedly in early 1920 at Timaru, where he and Catherine lived in retirement. James Guthrie was educated at Burkes Pass School. He left Timaru with the South Canterbury quota of the 16th Reinforcements on 3 May 1916. When he enlisted he was a shepherd at Albury. James married Mary Ann Mack in 1925 at Timaru.
