Biographical Notes

William Hillary, born on 13 September 1885 (or 1883) in County Clare, Ireland, was the son of Michael and Bridget (née Fitzgerald) Hillary. In 1901 fourteen year old William was recorded as afarmer's son at home with his family at Oughtdarra, Cloughaun, Count Calre. He married Mary Ellen (Nellie) Nolan on 4 December 1912 at Waimate, Their son William Thomas Hillary was born on 15 September 1913 at Waimate. When he enlisted in June 1918, William's lemployer was Mr J. Dailey, Waimate. W. Hillary was listed among the men of the Waimate quota of the 46th Draft who would parade at the Waimate Drillshed at 12.15 on 9th September 1918. He then left for camp after the South Canterbury quota paraded at the drill hall and left by the express. In May 1919 Waimate Borough lease was transferred to William Hillary.
