Lloyd William Shirley Timmins was the son of Joseph William and Mary Ann (née Lough) Timmins. He was educated at Ashburton School and Waimataitai School, Timaru. At the time of enlisting, Lloyd was a shepherd for J. Sutherland,Benmore Station. His brother Joseph also served in World War I.
