John Sutherland was the son of David St Clair Wemyss and Margaret (née Mitchell) Sutherland. He started at Outram School, then probably moved to Waimate. The family was in Waimate by 1893. He was serving with the 2nd South Canterbury Regiment, with which he went to camp. John married Helen Gertrude, possibly overseas. His brother William Sutherland also served in World War I, and his older brother David St Clair Wemyss Southerland was listed in the Reserve Rolls, he being married with children.
