Biographical Notes
Smith Bryce Mitchell, known as Bryce, was born on 10 October 1897 at Waitati, the youngest son of William Dunn and Maria (née Jeffrey) Mitchell. He was educated at Waimate and Timaru Main schools. Bryce was a plumber living at home in Timaru when he enlisted, naming his father as next-of-kin. B. S. Mitchell was in quite a large draft of men who went into camp at the beginning of March 1918 as South Canterbury’s quota for the 39th Reinforcements. Before leaving the men were given a brief farewell at the Drill Shed. His older brother, William John Mitchell, also served in World War I. Bryce married Eleanor McCartney in 1925.
