Biographical Notes

Andrew John Pearce was born (Andrew Pearce) on 8 August 1891 at Pleasant Point and was baptised Andrew at St Albans Anglican Church, Pleasant Point. Also known as Ben, he was the fourth son of Edwin (Edward) and Margaret Jessie (née Edwards) Pearce. Andrew was educated at Hazelburn School. His mother died in 1902, and his brother, Ernest Alfred Pearce, died in the Timaru Hospital as the result of a riding accident in 1909. He enlisted at John Andrew Pearce and died and was buried as Andrew John Pearce.

Andrew was a ploughman when he was called up. J. A. Pearce was in the draft of South Canterbury men who left for Trentham on 20 February 1917. After the war Andrew lived with his father and worked for a neighbouring farmer. There he was suffered a tragic death when he was struck by lightning on 9 November 1922, aged just 31 years. Andrew John Pearce was buried from St Albans Church thirty years after his baptism there.

His brother, Walter Hilary Pearce, also served in World War I, and another brother was listed in the Reserve Rolls. His sister Louisa married John Alexander McAuley who died of disease near Gallipoli in 1915.
