Biographical Notes

Tane HOPA was born in Temuka on 11 June 1895 or 11 July 1896 and was the son of Emma Lea COSGROVE (COSSGROVE) formerly HOPA. His mother married Osbert Lamond COSSGROVE in 1914 and thereafter lived at Tuahiwi in the Waimakariri District. His brother Murphy HOPA also served in WWI and died in 1921 in New Zealand as a result of his war service. Tane enlisted in the Kaiapoi district in May 1916, one of the 43 fit men of 76 enlistments in the Kaiapoi Group in mid May 1916. Tane gave 3 years and 186 days of service from 1916 (enlisting on 24 May 1916 at Narrow Neck Camp) until 1919, most of that in Western Europe. He returned to New Zealand per "Ionic", embarking on 8 September 1919 at Plymouth. In January 1918 he reverted to ranks as a punishment for Neglect of Duty. In August 1917 he had been appointed Temporary Corporal. Tane (Dan) married Clarice THOMAS in 1919 in Wales, before returning to New Zealand and being discharged. He died in 1953 in Wellington, of Porirua. He had a fine baritone voice and was a well-known and popular entertainer in Wellington. .
