Biographical Notes

Francis Aloysius McGrath was the son of Edward and Catherine (Kate, née Coughlan) McGrath, perhaps the youngest of the family. Edward, from Victoria, Australia, came to New Zealand at the age of 15 with his parents .After working for some years in Otago, and periodically visiting Australia to puchase horses, he married Kate Coughlann in 1874 on one of these visits. They lived briefly in Oamaru before settling in Timaru in 1876. In 1913 Frank was fined 20 shillings and costs for failing to render personal service under the Defence Act. a Timaru boy, writing to his parents in January 1916 from Egypt, mentions that he had met Frank McGrath and other Timaru boys. Frank married Annie Veronica Stickings in 1923.
