Biographical Notes

Erling Ziesler was the son of John William Smith and Lucy Emma (née Wright) Ziesler, of Timaru. He was educated at Waimataitai School, from where he went on to the High School. At the time of enlisting Erling was a clerk in Dalget and Co's Timaru office. Lieutenant Ziesler was awarded the Military Cross in 1917 - "Second Lieutenant Erling Zeisler, R. Bde.—For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty whilst in charge of his brigade dump. He so controlled his'working parties under continuous shell fire that he kept his own brigade supplied with ammunition and water, as well as meeting the demands of other brigades. On several occasions his dumps were blown up, yet, owing to his untiring energy, there was no shortage of munitions, water or rations." [Timaru Herald, 30 Oct 1917.] Erling married Daisy Frances Dailey in 1921 (New Zealand). Hazel was born in New Zealand and was living in Wellington in 1919. Erling died in 1986 in Bristol, England, and Daisy in 1990. Erling's older brother, Charles Frederick William Ziesler, born in 1877 at Timaru, went to Australia, married in Western Australia in 1909, and enlisted with the Australian forces. Charles died of wounds in 1918 London and is buried at Codford, England. Another brother, Charlton Conrad Zeisler, also served in World War I. Erling's son, Erling William Ziesler, died in an aircraft accident in 1954 (New Zealand).
