Biographical Notes

Robert George Allen was the youngest son of Jemima Ann Allen née Fisher. Jemima had married Henry McDonald in 1882 at Timaru, but after Henry's death, she married William James Allen, a widower. William died on 31 December 1892 at Timaru.

Robert was educated at Timaru South School. He had become a mill hand in Timaru prior to his enlistment. He proceeded overseas in July 1916 with the 15th Reinforcements, Wellington Infantry.

Following the war he married Charlotte Stubbs in Timaru in 1920. The couple had two children: Rhondda and Kenneth (1930-2017). After his first wife’s death Robert remarried. With his second wife Dorothy Maureen Clemens, known as Maureen, he had a further three children: Cecelia, John, and Mary. Robert died in 1974 and is buried with his second wife in Timaru Cemetery.

Robert’s brother Roland also served with the New Zealand Forces, and another brother, Jacob, was called up.
