Biographical Notes

Arthur William Yates was the son of William Melville and Elizabeth Archibald (née Robertson?) Yates. His parents were in New Zealand before July 1889. His father was a schoolmaster who was employed in several South Canterbury schools. Arthur was educated at Fairlie, Kohika and Rangitata Station schools. He returned to New Zealand on the Maunganui in June 1919. His brother, Frederick George Yates was killed in action on 25 April 1915 at Anzac Cove. Another brother, Herbert Joseph Yaes, also enlisted.
