Biographical Notes

Walter John Shaw, known as Ben, was the younger son of Thomas and Clara Jane (née Dutton) Shaw. He returned to New Zealand on the Maunganui in June 1919. He married Ella Jean skudder in 1922. Walter John Shaw, a foreman with the Rotorua Borough Council, died after attenpting to rescue a fellow workman from a blocked sewer, when both were overcome by toxic gasses. He was survived by his wife, three daughters and two sons. Walter's brother, Edmund enlisted for World War I.
