David John Powell was the son of David and Mary Powell. David had been in New Zealand for four years when he enlisted, after being called up in 1916 while working as a stockman-shepherd for C. Austin at Winchester. His father had died before this. He returned to New Zealand on the Maunganui in June 1919.
