Biographical Notes

Thomas Grattan Elkis was the younger son of John and Norah (née Connolly) Elkis. His mother died three months after his birth. He was educated at Winchester and Temuka schools. Thomas married Helena (Ellen) Mary Downes on 22 January 1915 at Temuka. Their first child, Pauline Veronica Elkis, was born on 29 June 1916 at Winchester. His older brother, William Henry Elkis, wascalled up while working as a railway porter at Palmerston North.
