Biographical Notes
Leonard Edward John Worthington was the second son of Robert and Catherine (née Jaggar) Worthington. He was educated at Temuka School. He also served in the South African War.
G Elliot expands on his service, noting: "... Leonard E J Worthington served in the Boer War as a Private with Brabants Horse in 1900, [&] was wounded. Then he served again in the Boer War as a Lance Corporal with the 8th New Zealand Contingent, 1902. Service number with Brabant's Horse was 5073, with the 8th Continent service number was 5617. Then when WWI, he enlisted, service number was 6/577. Discharged in 1916, returned home then soon after enlisted again, service number was then 17/221. In 1917 he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery. The medals he was issued in total were, Queens South Africa medal with clasps Cape Colony, Wepener, Wittebergen, Belfast and South Africa 1902. For WWI, 1914-15 Star, British War medal, Victory medal and Military Medal."
