Biographical Notes
Francis (Frank) Meagher, born on 19 January 1895 at Waimate, was the youngest son of Martin Joseph and Emily (née Hughes) Meagher. His schoolmaster father died in 1895 when Frank was barely seven months old, and his mother remarried in 1899, to Henry Harris Edwards. Frank enlisted - as Frank Meagher - in October 1917 at Sydney, aged 22 years 9 months. He gave initially as his next-of-kin his mother, Emily Edwards, of Waimate. This was subsequently changed to his wife, Doris Beryl née Elliott, whom he married on 19 June 1918 at Marrickville, New South Wales. In 1961 when Frank contaced Army Base Records in Melbourne, he was living at "Waimate", Wyongah, New South Wales. Also in 1961, R. J. Meagher, a nephew of Frank and at the time attached to the Civil Engineering Department of the South Australia Institute of Technology in Adelaide, wrote to the Officer in Charge, Base Records, War Memorial, Canberra, pointing out that an enquiry regarding Frank Meagher had been made some years ago. Frank had served in both World War One and World War Two. R. J. Meagher was asking for the name of frank's second wife and where and when the marriage took place; also whether Frank's daughter, Eileeen born in about 1920, had served in any of the services during WWII. The reply was brief and unhelpful - the information was confidential and could not be divulged. This nephew must be Richard John meagher, a son of Frank's oldes brother James.
