Andrew Young, born on 5 June 1894 at Winchester, South Canterbury, was the son of Richard and Sarah Elizabeth (née Budd) Young. Andrew wa seducated at the Winchester and Temuka schools. He married Florence Myrtle Funnell in 1918. He was a witness to the marriage of his brother Leslie Victor Young in 1917 at Temuka.
