Biographical Notes
George Henry Wilson, known as Henry, was the son of Robert Livesley Wilson and Elizabeth (née Fow). George Henry married Alice Holland on 11 April 1905 at Timaru. Their children, born before Henry left for war service were: Lottie Amelia Wilson born on 29 March 1908 at Timaru; Myra Holland Wilson born on 23 October 1912 at Timaru; and George Henry Wilson born on 4 November 1913 at Timaru.
The name George Wilson is recorded on the Waimate Knox Church Sunday School roll of honour, which was unveiled on 26 March 1916. Late in 1915 the “time had come to set down in order the names of ex-pupils of the Waimate Presbyterian Sunday School who had become soldiers of the Empire in the great fight for home and justice.”
George died on 5 August 1954 at Waimate and was honoured by the Waimate Returned Services' Association members after a joint service at the Knox Presbyterian Church, Waimate, for George and his wife Alice who had died the day before.
Two of George's brothers, Lieutenant Colonel Newman Robert Wilson (DSM MC VD) and Lance Corporal Edward (Ted) Douglas Wilson, also served in World War One. Edward died at Gallipoli on 7 August 1915.
