Biographical Notes
Frederick Henry Hatton, like his father known as Fred, was born on 27 March 1891 at Timaru, the second son of Frederick (Fred) and Jessie (née Walker) Hatton. His birth was registered as Frederick Henry Hatton Parkinson. It appears that his father was born Frederick Parkinson and was adopted by the Hatton family after his mother’s death. For a time he used the name Frederick Hatton Parkinson then simply Frederick Hatton . Six of the children were register Parkinson, two Hatton. He married as Frederick Parkinson and died as Frederick Parkinson Hatton. Along with his siblings Fred was educated at Waimataitai School. Frederick Henry Hatton, a shepherd, gave his home address on enlistment and named his father, Frederick Hatton, senior, as next-of kin. Fred married Margaret Mary Catherine Hart (Catherine) in 1921. He died on 26 December 1970 at Christchurch, aged 79 years, and is buried in the Ashburton Cemetery, his wife Catherine with him. Four Hatton brothers served in World War I, the others being James Robert, Stanley and Gordon. Their youngest brother, Nelson Stuart Hatton lost his life in World War II – 4 September 1942 in Egypt.
