Biographical Notes

George Arthur Charles Gibbs, whose name was registered at birth as simply George Gibbs, was born on 25 July 1882 at Waimate, the third son of Arthur and Jane (née Harpur) Gibbs. Some time after Robert’s birth in 1884, Arthur and Jane went their separate ways. Jane had further children with Alexander John McIntosh and Arthur later married Elizabeth Ann Pascoe of Waimate, by whom he had more children. George was educated at Timaru Main School, leaving at the age of twelve for work.

George Arthur Charles Gibbs enlisted on 12 August 1914 at Timaru. He was single, a butcher, and gave his address as care of J. McIntosh, 37 Matilda Street, Timaru. His nominated next-of-kin was his mother – Mrs Jane McIntosh, 37 Matilda Street, Timaru. G. a. C. Gibbs stated that he had served two years with the Townsville Rifles, Queensland, and, on re-enlisting, that he had served with the Queensland Light Horse. Private Gibbs embarked with the Canterbury Infantry Battalion on 16 October 1914. He returned home wounded. He enlisted again, on 19 February 1971 at Wellington, giving a Wellington address. He embarked with the Wellington Infantry Regiment on 9 June 1917.

Discharged on 14 May 1919, George Gibbs resumed his employment as a butcher at Wellington. He died on 30 July 1929 at Christchurch, aged 47 years., and was buried in the RSA section of Bromley Cemetery. His half-brother, Stanley Herbert McIntosh, died of wounds on 29 March 1918 in France, and another half-brother, James Kingsley McIntosh, who had served overseas, died on 3 June 1918 as the result of a motor cycle accident near Timaru.
