Sydney Lory WILLIAMS was the yougest son of the Rev. William James WILLIAMS, sometime Wesleyan minister at Timaru, by his first wife Alice Mary née HOSKING. Educated in Auckland, at Central Nelson School and at Nelson Boys' College. He was awarded the DCM and the Military Medal. He was one of five brother engaged in World War I activity. Brother Bertram Victor WILLIAMS was killed in action in 1917 in WWI; brother Hugh Hosking WILLIAMS served in WWI & WWII; brother Owen Wallis WILLIAMS served with distinction in WWI, brother Harold Whitmore WILLIAMS was a war correspondent in WWI.
