Biographical Notes
Son/stepson of Jeremiah and Ellen Tangney. John was mentioned in a Timaru Herald article of 21 May 1918 as having died at Gallipoli. However there does not appear to be a record of a John Tangney, even though a J Tangney appears on the Timaru War Memorial Wall. A John Tangney was listed on the Reserve Rolls as a barman, living in Wellington. Later he was gazetted as a Military defaulter. Paperspast quoted father Jerimiah saying that John had died at Gallipol, had a wife and lived in Wellington. A marriage by John Tangney to Isabella Mabel Rawlinson appears in 1901, but the couple later divorced in 1924. Was it possible the story that John was killed came about to cover the shame of him being a defaulter?
John had several step-brothers that also served: Francis Patrick, Walter Bernard (aka Walter George), Robert Edward, Patrick William, and William Patrick.
