Biographical Notes

Alexander Proudlock was born at Temuka on 29 January 1896 to John Grant Proudlock and his wife Ellen (nee Taylor), the sixth child of nine children.

Alexander put his age up by two years when he enlisted on 13 December 1914, claiming to be 20 years old when he was only 18. He was a labourer employed by H. McCully of Temuka – described as 5ft 7in, and 134lbs, with a dark complexion, dark brown eyes, and black hair. He gave his next of kin as his mother, Mrs J. Proudlock of 48 Hamilton St, Temuka, and claimed previous military experience with the South Canterbury Mounted Rifles and senior cadets before that. Proudlock (service no.7/889) embarked for Suez on 12 February 1915, arriving on 26 March. He was admitted to hospital in Cairo in August and December of 1915 and also spent a few months with the 2nd Battalion of the Auckland Infantry Regiment. Proudlock was wounded in France on 16 September 1916 with a gunshot wound to his “lower extremities”, and wounded for a second time in June 1917 with a gunshot wound to his left leg. He was promoted to corporal in the field November 1917, but received another shrapnel wound to his right thigh on 30 November1917. After his three woundings Proudfoot was classified unfit on April 1918. He embarked for New Zealand at Liverpool 1 May 1918 and returned on the Ulimaroa, arriving in June 1918. He was finally discharged on 21 August 1918 no longer physically fit for war service on account of illness contracted on active service, with a total service of three years 252 days.

In 1919 he was working as a teamster in Temuka, in 1928 as a tramway employee in Christchurch. He married Sarah Jane Gillies Patterson in 1929. In 1938 Proudlock was a farmer in East Eyreton, and he was a caretaker in Christchurch in 1954. He died on 19 February 1967, at that time living at 256 Edgeware Rd, Christchurch.
