Biographical Notes
George Proudlock was born at Temuka on 31 December 1887 to John Grant Proudlock and his wife Ellen (nee Taylor), the eldest son of nine children. As a young man he participated in miniature rifle shooting with modest success.
George (service no. 2/2517) enlisted on 25 August 1915, aged 27, as a gunner with the NZ Field Artillery, Anglican. He was a self-employed farm hand, recorded as standing 5ft 8in tall, weighing 158lbs, of florid complexion, with dark brown eyes, and brown hair. His younger brother Alexander had already put up his age to enlist in December 1914. George also claimed previous military experience with the Temuka Volunteers. His next of kin was his father, J. Proudlock of Hamilton St, Temuka, the same address as George. He embarked for Egypt with the 8th Reinforcements at Wellington on 13 November 1915, disembarking at Suez on 20 December. George was admitted to the NZ Field Hospital in Cairo on 11 January 1916 suffering from phimosis. He was treated and discharged on 10 February, rejoining his unit at Zeitoun on 6 March, then embarking for France on 7 April 1916. George fought at the Western Front for the rest of the war, with a stint at the South African field hospital in June 1917 for an unnamed injury, and then back to England on leave the following month. He took his final discharge on 6 June 1919 having served 3 years 178 days overseas.
After the war George married Isobel Atkinson in 1926 and bought a farm at Templeton. He died in Christchurch in 1961.
