Biographical Notes
William BERRY (Bill), born on 27 November 1878 at Geraldine, was the eldest son of William BERRY and Hannah née YEOMANSON. His parents had both come from England and married in New Zealand in 1877. His father died at Geraldine in 1902. Bill went to the Geraldine School where, in 1887, he was awarded a certificate for regular attendance. On 18 Aptil 1906 at St Peter's Anglican Church, Temuka, he married Flora LEE, They had two sons - William born on 12 May 1907 and attended the temuka School, and Alfred who was born in 1908 and died at just 7 hours. William einrolled in the New Zealand xpeditionary Force Reserve under the Military Service Act of 1916 on 15 May 1917. Having been drawn in the ballot, he enlisted on 6 June 1918 at Timaru. He left home on 9 September 1918 and arrived at camp the next day. He was posted to A Company before being transferred to T. Details in the following month. On demobilisation, 4 December 1918, he had no disability resulting from military service and was found to be in good health. As of March 1919 he was still in camp. Bill's brother Walter Harold also served in World War One.
