Martin was the son of Mr. F. Hughes, of Gardenham, Drumgriffin P.O., Co. Galway, Ireland. He arrived in New Zealand in 1911, lived and worked in the Waimate area as a carpenter before moving north to the Nelson area where he enlisted in the Army at Appleby 10 November 1916.
His wish was to return to Ireland and he thought by joining the army this was a way of having his fare paid back to Ireland, sadly he did not make it due to being wounded in action and passing away two days later. His medals were sent back to Ireland, the British War and Victory Medal along with the hat badge and the collar badge.
Martin still has descendants living in South Canterbury and Auckland (in 2015).
