Biographical Notes
Ernest Samuel Marshall was born on 31 March 1898 at Kaiapoi, the youngest son of William Dean Marshall and his first wife, Alice Mary née Barnes. Alice died in 1901. Ernest and his brother Lionel were admitted to Waihao Native School (Waimate) in 1906 from Waikuku School. His oldest brother had transferred in 1901 and then come back in 1906. All three boys went on to Waimate High School. Their father married again in 1908 at Morven. Ernest was a farmer, working for his father at Morven, when he enlisted on 29 May 1918, after being called up. He named his father as next-of-kin – Mr W. D. Marshall, Morven, South Canterbury. He was a member of the South Canterbury quota of the Forty-sixth Reinforcements which left Timaru by the north express on 9 September 1918 after parading at the drill hall. E. S. Marshall did not serve overseas, but even so he appears on the "Court Star of Waihao No. 7929 Roll of Honour" for World War One.
Ernest married Lillian Minnie Bailey in 1925 at Morven. The Waimate Museum and Archives Early Settlers Index also notes he farmed at Waikakahi (Blk VII sec 6 from 1919, and Blk VII sec 21 from 1938-51). He was also president of the Morven Miniature Rifle Club from 1921-25 and secretary/treasurer of the Waihao vestry beginning in 1927. He died on 2 January 1977, aged 78 years, and was buried in the Waimate Lawn Cemetery. Ernest's oldest brother, Frederick George Marshall, was killed in action in 1916 in France. His brother, Lionel Arthur Marshall, also served in World War One.
