Biographical Notes

James Jubilee COULTER was the son of James and Mary (nee BARRETT) COULTER. James and his siblings were admitted to the Burnham Industrial School.

S Wallis commented "James, Robert and william Coulter and also Minnie Ode were all adopted children of Sarah Rickus. from what i know she ran a home for orphans."

Another submission from S Coulter noted:"James Jubilee Coulter born 20 April 1887, Wellington. James enlisted on 6 May 1916. Medical examination showed a fall from ladder 6yrs previously resulting in 6 months off work. Also showed history of Chronic Gastritis and a "nervous episode in 1912. He joined the Battalion in the field in France. Some 4 months later he was admitted to field hospitals on several occasions over a month until finally shipped to Walton hospital in England. Discharge from Army 23 Oct 1917 "no longer physically fit" and returned to NZ late October 1917. Death 25th April 1968, at his sons home, Claremont, South Canterbury. Buried at RSA plot Timaru Cemetery."
