Biographical Notes
Dr Herbert Barclay had a practice in Waimate and also one of the first people in Waimate to own a car. Dr Barclay had also been commissioned as a Captain in the Territorials in 1898, serving with the Waimate Rifles Volunteers in 1901. He was then appointed to the rank of Major in the 2nd (South Canterbury) Regiment in 1911, and finally promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in 1914.
Dr Barclay had married Ruth Annie Clapcott on 30 September 1890 and had four children: Dorothy Amy (b.1891), Clifford Clapcott (b.1893), Ruth Marjory Cruickshank (b.1899), and George Oliver Clapcott (b.1904).
Barclay served in World War One. He had desire to go to India to be attached to an infantry unit there, but instead volunteered to join English forces in Petrograd, where he was attached to the Russian Red Cross Field Hospital in September 1914 at the 5th Kauffanaki Hospital. He returned to England in January 1915 and served as a Major in the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) in England until 1918.
After the war he was posted to the retirement list, retaining the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He died in England in 1932.
