Biographical Notes
Tieke Peneanene was born on 10 August 1885, at Georgetown, Otago.
Tieke volunteerted with the New Zealand Pioneer (Māori) Battalion, A Company, 1st Māori Contingent. On enlistment he gave his next of kin as Mr Hohepa Peneamene of Morven, Canterbury. Tieke was working as a farm labourer for Thomas Barden, also of Morven, when he enlisted on 19 October 1914. He embarked for Europe on board HMNZT 20, Warrimoo, on 14 February 1915 from Wellington, disembarked at Suez, Egypt, on 26 March 1915. He served throughout the war in Egyt and in the Balkans, landing at Gallipoli, both in 1915. After the Gallipolli campaign he then served with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force in 1916, before his unit was transferredf to the Western European from, where he served from 1916 unitl the end of the wear in 1919. Overall he served for 150 days in New Zealand and four years and 51 days overseas - a total service of four years and 201 days. Tieke returned to New Zealand aboard the Westmoreland on 10 April 1919, finally being discharged on 7 May 1919. For his service he was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, and Victory Medal. He was also awarded the Gallipoli Medallion when that was issued some decades later.
