Biographical Notes

James Leonard CAMPBELL was the eldest son of Peter and Ada (nee REIGATE) CAMPBELL.He was educated at Timaru Main School. On first enlistment James gave his birth year as 1895 and age as 20 years 10 months where as he would have been only 17 years old. He appears to have enlisted twice, having been discharged from N.Z.E.F. because he was unfit. On the two occasions (1915, 1917/18) there are noticeable differences in the information as to his age, residential address, and occupation. James contracted the 1918 influenza. After a spell in Brockenhurst Hospital, he returned to duty at 1st N.Z. General Hospital on a daily basis; as he had done after influenza in 1916 (on that occasion at Codford). 1918 was a tough year of hospitalization for James. He returned home in December 1918, embarking at Liverpool per "Tahiti". In 1920 he married Nita WINGHAM. When his medals were sent to him (1921/22) James was at the Electro Medical Institute in Palmerston North. Altogether James gave almost four years of war service. His next-of-kin at death was his widow Nita.
