Sources

Bryce Seddon Ennis was born on 7 October 1897 at Temuka, the second son of David and Caroline Selina (Carrie, née Tatam) Ennis. David from County Down, Northern Ireland and New Zealand born Caroline, who was some 40 years younger, married in 1893 at Timaru. Bryce was educated at Milford School near Temuka and at Temuka School. He was a clerk at Waimate for National Mortgage when he enlisted (as Bryce Ennis) on 11 October 1917 at Timaru. He was serving with the 2nd South Canterbury Regiment. Single and of Church of England allegiance, he named his mother as next-of-kin – Mrs Caroline Selina Ennis, Willowbridge, Waimate. Private B. Ennis embarked with the 37th Reinforcements, departing on 9 May 1918 per the “Maunganui” and disembarking at Liverpool. He proceeded overseas on 21 September 1918. Suffering a gunshot wound to his right wrist in France on 10 October 1918, he was admitted to hospital in England on 14 October. In England he got into a bit of strife. The proceedings of a Court of Enquiry convened at Codford on 17 February 1919 ruled that he had absented himself illegally on 11 January 1919 and was still absent. He was also deficient of kit valued at £6. 0. 11. The kit deficiency was subsequently cancelled. On 30 May 1919 at Codford he was sentenced to undergo imprisonment without hard labour for six months. On 2 June his sentence was commuted to 90 days Detention and he was to forfeit 125 days pay. Ennis embarked for New Zealand per the “Adolph Woermann” at Plymouth on 14 August 1919 and arrived at Wellington on 7 October. He was discharged on 31 October 1919, no longer physically fit for war service on account of illness contracted on active service. For his service in Western Europe he was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. Bryce Seddon Ennis died on 27 April 1952 at Wanganui, aged 54 years, and was buried at Aramoho Cemetery, Wanganui, a services plaque marking his grave. His father died in 1925 at Timaru Hospital and his mother in 1953 at Palmerston North.
