Biographical Notes

Arthur Bond was born on 31 December 1889 at Wolsingham, Durham, England, the fifth son of Thomas and Mary Ann (née Savill) Bond, although two of his five older brothers had died in infancy, as did the one born after him. Another died in 1908 and yet another in 1912. Frank, who was immediately older than Arthur, also came to New Zealand and, like Arthur, lived to a good age. Four sisters also died in infancy, while two came to New Zealand and lived to good a age also. Arthur was baptised on 25 March 1890 at Durham. He was at home with his family at Wolsingham in 1891. By 1901 the family had moved to Cheam, Surrey. Arthur stated that he had been nine years in New Zealand when he enlisted in 1917. His parents and one sister arrived in 1913, while his brother Frank and sister Annie had come earlier. Arthur’s sister, Florence, and his brother, Frank, married a brother and sister in a double wedding at the Hataitai Methodist Church just before Christmas 1914. Mr Arthur Bond attended his brother.

Arthur married Isabella Boyd on 3 November 1915 at Temuka, Canterbury. He was a carpenter at Masterton when he was called up in 1917. Enlisting on 10 May 1917 at Masterton, he named his wife as next-of-kin – Mrs A. Bond, care of Mrs Boyd, Allnatt Street, Temuka. Lance Corporal A. Bond embarked with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, departing for Plymouth, England, by the “Ulimaroa” on 26 July 1917. 55901 A. Bond, of Temuka, came home by Returning Draft 191 (Remuera) which was due to arrive in October 1918.

In the ballot for the Coldstream soldiers’ settlement, held on 18 September 1919, Arthur Bond (Temuka) was successful in drawing a section. Arthur Bond died on 2 July 1977 at Ashburton, aged 87 years. He was buried at Ashburton Cemetery with Isabella who had died in 1950.
