Biographical Notes

Albert Dennis Crossman was born on 27 December 1888 at Brookside (near Christchurch), the third son of George and Mary Sophia (née Frampton) Crossman. George and Mary married in 1879 in their native Somerset. In 1880 their first child was born at Brookside, Canterbury, New Zealand. By 1911 Albert was a farm laburer at Levels Valley, where his oldest brother, Alfred George Crossman, was a farmer.

Albert D. Crossman, Levels, was one of the South Canterbury recruits for the eleventh reinforcements (Infantry), who left Timaru for Trentham on 15 December 1915. When he enlisted on 15 December 1915 at Trentham, his address was Levels. A farmer, single, and Wesleyan, he named his father as next-of-kin – George Crossman, Brookside. Private A. D. Crossman embarked with the Canterbury Infantry Battalion of the 11th Reinforcements, departing from Wellington for Suez, Egypt, on 1 April 1916. On 5 April 1917 at Plymouth he embarked per the “Athenic” for the return to New Zealand. All his service was in Europe, for which he was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Albert Crossman married Anna Elizabeth Gudex (Bessie) in 1918. He returned to farming and lived at Milford near Temuka until his death. Albert Dennis Crossman served with the Home Guard in World War Two, while his son, Edward James Crossman (Ted) served with the air force. His younger brother, Frederick Wiliam Crossman, also served in World War One and Alfred was listed on the Reserve Rolls, being a married man with children. His father died suddenly in 1914. Albert Dennis Crossman, too, died suddenly – on 1 February 1951 at his Milford residence. He was buried at Temuka Cemetery, his wife Anna with him almost twenty years later. They were survived by two sons and a daughter.
