Biographical Notes

Stanley Frank Bailey was born on 22 November 1895 at Templeton, the elder son of Frank and Edith Mary (née Powell) Bailey. He was started his schooling at Springston, transfeering in succession to Sumner, Templeton, Phillipstown and East Christchurc schools, before returning to Springston, from where he went home to work in 1909.

He was a mechanic at Waiihaorunga when he enlisted on 22 September 1916 at Feaherton. Single and of Church of England affiliation, he named his mother as next-of-kin – Mrs F. Bailey, Straven Street, Lower Riccarton, Christchurch. He was serving with D Company of the South Canterbury Regiment. Trooper S. F. Bailey embarked with the Mounted Rifle Brigade, departing from Wellington for Suez, Egypt, per the “Moerakie” on 15 February 1917. He was discharged on 20 June 1919 and was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. The name of S. F. Bailey appeared regularly on the Waimate Daily Advertiser Roll of Honour under the sub-title of Answered the Call.

Stanley married Nina McCullough in 1921. Nina died in 1930, leaving three young children. Stanley married Sybil Mercia McRae in 1933. He died on 22 February 1973 at Broad Gully, Morven, Waimate, aged 77 years, and was buried at Waimate Old Cemetery alongside Nina, a services stone marking his grave. Sybil died in 1996.
