Biographical Notes

John Reddan, known as Jack, was born on 3 July 1890 at Oamaru, the only son of Irish -born John and Margaret (Gleeson) Reddan. He was a labourer at Timaru when he was called up in 1916. He enlisted on 23 January 1917 at Timaru. His appeal was dismissed when he failed to appear before the Military Appeal Board on 5 February 1917. A week later he was off to camp. A storeman for Evans Flour Mill at Timaru, he named his mother as next-of-kin – Mrs J. Reddan, Francis Block, Timaru (Oamaru?). He stated that two people were absolutely dependent on him – his father and one child, although he was single. At the Oamaru Magistrate’s Court on 14 February 1917, a Maintenance of Arrears case was dealt with – “John Reddan was charged by the police with failure to pay maintenance of an inmate of an 1917industrial home. He was convicted and sentenced to two months’ imprisonment witii hard labor in Lyttelton Gaol, to be released n tho arrears. £l2, were paid.” Gunner J. Reddan embarked on 12 June 1917 with the New Zealand Field Artillery of the 27th Reinfocements, leaving for Plymouth, England, per the “Maunganui”. J. Reddan returned to New Zealand (Timaru) by the “Somerset” which was due at Lyttelton about 12 August 1919. His Will, signed 6 June 1918, was in the possession of Mrs J. Reddan, Francis Block, Oamaru. His next-of-kin for World War Two service (as John Francis Reddan) was his wife, Mrs Mable Frances Reddan, 35 Reed Street, Oamaru. John Francis Reddan died on 29 July 1967 at Oamaru, aged 82 years (per death registration). He was buried in the Oamaru Old Cemetery with his parents.
