Biographical Notes

Andrew Stewart Dewar was born on 22 April 1896 at Oamaru, the first-born of Lunam and Margaret Sutherland (née Meldrum) Dewar. He was educated at Oamaru South School, leaving at the age of 13½ to work. He was an ironmonger when he enlisted, naming his father as next-of-kin – L. Dewar, Waimate. Lance Corporal A. S. Dewar embarked with the 19th Reinforcements, leaving from Wellington on 15 November 1916. A. S. Dewar returned to New Zealand (Timaru) by the “Somerset” which was due at Lyttelton about 12 August 1919. In 1926 he married Ellen May Reynolds. Andrew Stewart Dewar saw service again in World War Two (474583), that service being the cause of his death on 9 June 1947 at Oamaru. His burial in Oamaru Cemetery is a Commonwealth War Graves site. Ellen died in 1971 and is buried with Andrew.
