Biographical Notes

William McKinney was born on 20 March 1879 in Australia, he declared on enlisting. On 23 January 1913 at Timaru, he married Harriet Rosa Deans. A son, Robert John Rolleston McKinney, was born on 5 August 1913 at Timaru and baptized on 28 September 1913 at St Mary’s, Timaru. (His birth and death were registered simply as Robert McKinney.) A daughter, Marjory Rosa McKinney, was born on 4 May 1920 and baptized on 15 October 1920 at t Mary’s. Both children attended Timaru West School. William gave his occupation as billiard marker when he enlisted on 10 June 1918 at Timaru. He named his wife as next-of-kin - Mrs Harriet Rosa McKinney, Stafford Street, Timaru, and later of 41 Nibblett Street, Wanganui. He was a member of the South Canterbury quota of the Forty-sixth Reinforcements which left Timaru by the north express on 9 September 1918 after parading at the drill hall. W. McKinney did not serve overseas. He died on 23 June 1964, aged 85 years. It would appear that he was cremated, his ashes being interred with Harriet in the Deans plot at Timaru Cemetery. Harriet had died in 1956. William’s brother-in-law, Francis Richardson Deans, served in World War One.
