Biographical Notes

Joseph Stanley Coira Woodhead was born on 28 July 1885 at Ohape near Temuka, the second of the three sons of Joseph (Joe) and Agnes (née Cain) Woodhead. Joseph and Agnes married in 1973 and from then the family lived at Springbank Farm at Milford. His father died in 1893 and his mother carried on the farm until her death in 1927. Along with all his siblings, he was educated at Milford School near Temuka. He married Florence Mary Gill on 23 February 1916 at Milford. Evelyn Lorraine Woodhead was born on 26 June 1916 at Temuka and Vera Mary Agnes Woodhead on 4 June 1918 at Temuka. Farming at Rangitira Valley when his name was drawn in the Fifth Ballot, he enlisted on 30 March 1917 at Temuka. He named his wife as next-of-kin - Mrs Florence Mary Woodhead, Birkett Street, Temuka. Joseph died on 1 December 1973, aged 88 years, and was buried in the Temuka Cemetery with Florence who had died in 1938. His brother, Francis Barclay Woodhead, also enlisted. Neither served overseas.
