Biographical Notes

George Bishop Turnbull was born on 5 April 1882 at Gore, the third son of James and Elizabeth (née Walker) Turnbull. He married Jessie Gibbon MacDonell on 10 April 1907 at Gore. Their son, James Rae Turnbull, was born on 8 January 1908 at Gore. James started at Gore School in 1913 before transferring to Waihao Downs School. From Waihao Downs he went to Waimate Main School in 1921 and then on to Waimate District High School. G. B. Turnbull was a grocer for the Canterbury Farmers’ Co-operative at Waihao Downs when he enlisted on 17 May 1918 at Timaru. He named his wife as next-of-kin - Mrs Jessie Gibbon Turnbull, Waihao Downs. He had served with the Gore Rifles and was discharged on resigning. He was a member of the South Canterbury quota of the Forty-sixth Reinforcements which left Timaru by the north express on 9 September 1918 after parading at the drill hall. G. B. Turnbull did not serve overseas. After the war William continued as a grocer. He died on 10 April 1964, just days after his 82nd birthday, and was buried in the Waimate Lawn Cemetery wit Jessie who had died in 1961. Three of George’s brothers served in the war – James Walker Turnbull came home; Christie Mackay Turnbull was killed in action on 5 April 1918 in France; and Joseph Green Watson Turnbull was killed in action on 16 April 1918 in France. His son, James Rae Turnbull, saw action in World War Two.
