William Jack, known as Willie, was born on 18 January 1881 at Oamaru, the fourth son of John and Isabella Ferguson (née Mickle) Jack. Willie was educated at Oamaru North and Oamaru Middle schools. On 9 November 1911 at Waimate, William married Bertha Hilda Walker. Their son, William Herbert Jack, was born on 10 September 1912 at Waimate. He was a blacksmith at Waimate when he enlisted on 7 June 1918, having been called up from the Second Division (married men with one child). He named his wife as next-of-kin - Mrs B. H. Jack, North Road, Waimate. He was a member of the South Canterbury quota of the Forty-sixth Reinforcements which left Timaru by the north express on 9 September 1918 after parading at the drill hall. W. Jack did not serve overseas.

He died on 25 December 1950, aged 69 years. Bertha died in 1965. They are buried together in the Waimate Old Cemetery. His brother, George Gray Jack, served in World War One, and an older brother, David Mickle Jack, had served in the South African War.
