Biographical Notes

Reginald Charles Gosden was born on 23 March 1883 at Harting, Sussex, England, and baptized on 13 May 1883 in Sussex. At home at Harting in 1891 and 1901, he appears to be the only child of Henry and Mary (née White) Gosden. He married Evelyn Elizabeth Heath on 18 November 1909 at West Grinstead. Their son, Reginald Cyril Gosden, was born on 12 August 1910 at West Grinstead. In 1911 Reginald, Evelyn and their 5-month-old son were at Harting, Reginld working as a gardener. By 1914 the family was in New Zealand. In 1918 young Regianald was at Springbrook School, South Canterbury, Springbrook being the address of Reginald, senior, when he enlisted on 7 June 1918 at Timaru. He was a member of the South Canterbury quota of the Forty-sixth Reinforcements which left Timaru by the north express on 9 September 1918 after parading at the drill hall. A farmer, he named his wife as next-of-kin - - Mrs E. E. Gosden, Springbrook, Pareora, Timaru. R. C Gosden did not serve overseas. Reginald Charles Gosden died on 16 June 1970 at Christchurch, aged 87 years. Evelyn had died in 1961.
