Biographical Notes

Andrew Alexander Mitchell was the youngest son of Andrew and Helen (Ellen, née Dawson) Mitchell. He was born on 23 May 1889 at Dunedin (according to his military personnel file; another source says Edendale, and his birth was registered at Gore). Along with most of his siblings he was educated at Edendale School; the youngest, Gladys, who was born in 1900, started at Timru Main in 1907. Andrew, junior, was living at home – Maltby Street, Timaru – when he enlisted. A clerk, single and Presbyterian, he named his mother as next-of-kin – Mrs Andrew Mitchell, Maltby Street, Timaru. Sergeant A. A. Mitchell embarked with the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, on 16 February 1917 per the “Navua”. He was severely wounded on 14 October 1917 at Flanders and lost an arm. In 1918, he married Charlotte Elizabeth Cockerill (Lottie), who died in February 1949. Andrew Alexander Mitchell died on 1 September 1975 at Christchurch, aged 86 years.
