Biographical Notes

Donald Gordon Campbell was the youngest son of John and Jane (née Campbell) Campbell. He was born on 20 August 1893 at Timaru and grew up at the family property, Fairfield Farm, Pareora. He was educated at Pareora West School and Timaru High School. John's father was elected a member of Pareora School Committee in 1878, and in 1884 he was voted to the chair. His mother presented a prize at Pareora School for the best attendant during the year; she also judged the sewing. Donald enlisted on 25 October 1917 at Christchurch, after his nae had been drawn in the ballot, and was medically examined on the same day. He was a farmer on his own account, at West Eyreton. His brother John served and was severely wounded. Two other brothers were called up – William Duncan Campbell and James Robert Campbell.
