Biographical Notes

Charles Shailes was born on 1 December 1897 at Purton, Wiltshire, England, the second son of Job and Emma (née Garlick) Shailes. Charles was at home with his family at Purton in 1901. By 1911 14-year-old Charles was a boarder at Purton, working on a farm. He was orphaned before the age of ten, his father having died in 1904 and his mother in 1906. Charles Shailes was a farm hand at Strathconan, Fairlie, when he enlisted, naming his sister as next-of-kin – Miss M. Shailes, Walton-on-Thames, England. This would appear to be Mary Ann (Annie), who married in August 1917 at Walton-on-Thames. He also named a friend at Strathconan – Mr F. Scarland. He was already serving with the 2nd South Canterbury Regiment. Private C. Shailes embarked with the 39thy Reinforcements per the “Athenic” on 13 June 1918. C. Shailes, 78272, of Fairlie, returned to New Zealand by the “Cordoba” which was expected at Wellington on 30 August 1919. Charles married Linnie Annie Rachell Hannigan in 1923 at St Mary’s Church, Timaru. On enlisting for World War Two, Charles was residing at 41 James Street, Timaru, and named his wife, Linnie R. A. Shailes, as next-of-kin. He died on 1 October 1971 at Timaru, aged 73. He was survived by Linnie who died in 1988, and three children. Charles and Linnie are buried in the Timaru Cemetery, their plot marked by a memorial stone to both and a services plaque for Charles.
