Biographical Notes

John Christopher Ridder was born on 28 August 1892 at Christchurch, the third son of Frederick Christopher (Friedrich Christoph) and Anna Maria (née Rathgen) Ridder. John was educated at Rabbit Island and Central New Brighton schools before transferring to Waihaorunga School on its opening day in 1902. In 1903 he went to Waimate District High School. The family afterwards moved to Lochiel, Southland. A carpenter at Lochiel, John named his father as next-of-kin – F. C. Ridder, Lochiel, Invercargill. Private J. C. Ridder embarked with the Otago Infantry Battalion of the 10th Reinforcements on 4 March 1916, departing from Wellington for Suez, Egypt. Wounded on 23 July 1916, 8/4006 J. C. Ridder of Invercargill returned home by the hospital ship “Maheno”, arriving in mid-December 1916. He had suffered gunshot wounds to the bdomen and part of the sciatic nerve causing drop right foot. In 1927 he married Isabella McNaughton. John Christopher Ridder died of pneumonia on 18 August 1931 at Riverton. After a service at the Otautau Presbyterian Church he was buried in the Otautau Cemetery.
